Gravity Has Been Good To Me (Well, Sort Of)

Sometimes I wonder how bungie jumping ever started.

I mean, did somebody say "Hey, I think I'll tie a rubber band around my legs and then jump, upside down, off of an extremely high bridge, only to have my insides jostled and jiggled around until my appendix is where my heart once was, my spinal cord is wrapped around my ankles, my eyes have popped out of my head, my nerves have snapped and my throat is raw from screaming. That sounds like fun!"

Did they then say "I am hoping my life will flash before my eyes, my heart won't burst from all the palpitations, and that my bladder will hold just one more time. I am also hoping that my lunch will stay where it belongs."

Did they have any concern at all? Did they think "I wonder if the band will break and I will make an enormous splash as I plummet, screaming, 6 gajillian miles per hour to my death. I wonder if the band will stop my death-plunge at the last minute and break every bone in my body as it whips me back from certain death?"

I mean, doesn't it sound like fun?

Did they question "Should I update my facebook status one last time, just in case? Should I change my cellphone message to 'Don't call me, I'll call you......when my arm gets out of the cast or my brain cells stop rattling around in my head so that I can form a coherent thought...'"

Did they buy extreme-sports insurance, and is there even such a thing?

I just wonder how these things get started. It wasn't me, I promise you that much. You will never see me throwing myself off a cliff/bridge like that. I get nauseous just stepping off the curb.

I like gravity, it's always been good to me (well, sort of.....until I got older but that's a whole 'nother story). It's gravity and the ground for me!

Making Your Home Sing: Pick It Up!

Making your home sing Mondays

Welcome to the Making Your Home Sing Monday meme! Every day you are doing something to make your house into a home for yourself and your family (if you have one). My point with each Monday post is, what are you doing or going to do today to make your home sing?

It can be an attitude or an action. Motivation, our attitude, baking, encouraging our husband or children (if we have either one), organization, cleaning, saving money....the opportunities are endless.

I am back again this week with a familiar theme lately: my busy life and my messy house. Well, sort of messy. Some parts are neat and some aren't. It's the "some aren't" that's bugging me!

My 22 year old son was home from college this week on break. So I told him to bring some laundry home so I could do it for him. (I love being able to help him out like that when he's home, although he offers to do it himself).

Then the washing machine started leaking and I needed towels to soak it up. Then I needed the washing machine to wash the towels, but needed the towels to soak up the water leaking from the machine.....you get my drift. Anyway, that's a mess I didn't need.

Last Saturday and Sunday we were gone most of the day. I did my usual things during the week, and managed to spend some time with both of my boys (and hubby too!).

I also had to drop everything and run to help out with something at the church a couple of times.

So, with all this running around and running in and out my home cleaning has suffered. I managed to keep up with meals, laundry and dishes (which are the three biggies, I feel) but I have not managed to pick up after myself.

Boy, when I don't do the "pick-up" habit, things sure fall apart in a hurry! Just imagine, if you left just FIVE things out a day, instead of putting them away where they belong, at the end of one week you'd have 35 items out of place.

Can you imagine if you left TEN things out a day? You'd have 70 items cluttering up your home in just one week's time. And if everyone in your family left 10 things out a day, you could have 100+ items cluttering things up in just one short week.

So, this week I am going to get back to my pick-up habit and starting picking things up and putting them away (instead of leaving them out). That will make my home sing and make me sing too (and I need that since my oldest has to go back to college again!).

Hair's The Thing.......

"Please don't break up with me because I am trying to grow my hair out."

Long ago, before my husband and I were married but were "seriously" dating, I jokingly said this to him. Only I wasn't entirely kidding.

I was trying to grow my hair out after my previous dating relationship "failure."

Back in my dating days, whenever I felt like my heart was broken because things didn't work out, I would go out and get my hair cut. It's a good thing there was a little space in between or I would have been bald.

Oh, and maybe I'd buy a new pair of jeans or a new shirt to cheer myself up as well. One guy dern near cost me an entire new wardrobe.

I don't know if I was trying to reinvent myself or just cheer myself up. Maybe a little of both. But a new hairstyle made a "new woman" out of me.

Personally, I think my hubby took pity on me by marrying me. Either that or maybe he just has a thing against haircuts.

Making Your Home Sing: It's A Dance!

This last week a friend called and asked me to meet her for ice cream. Now, I ask you, who can say no to that?

While we were talking I commented on how busy my weeks were, and that I was hoping that next year I'd have more time. Then we laughed because we both knew that I'd somehow manage to fill up the time or have it filled for me. Isn't that always the case?

I am a wife, homeschooling mom to one, mother of another son in college, pastor's wife, caretaker for my 87 year old mother (who lives with us) and after-school care provider for a friend's developmentally disabled daughter.

I am busy, just like you. If I don't fill my time, someone else will be happy to fill it for me! When I do have some time I have choices to make.

Should I clean the kitchen or should I read my new home magazine? Should I do laundry or should I read a chapter in my book? Should I take my mom to the beach so she can get out of the house or should I stay home and get some cleaning and laundry done? Should I go meet with a friend who needs some encouragement or should I stay home with my son who is working on a project for school and may have some questions?

Should I fold and put away the laundry or should I sweep the hardwoods instead? Should I meet with this person or that person? Do I watch a movie with my family or finish cleaning the kitchen and doing the laundry? (Usually, if it comes to that my family always wins!)

Some choices are easy, some not so easy. There are times when laundry and mopping needs to give way in order to be there for someone who is hurting and needs a word of encouragement and listening ear. Sometimes it's not a matter of which is the better choice, because sometimes both choices are good and valid, so which one do you choose to do?

I am behind in my blog reading and blog commenting, not to mention blog writing. Do I spend more time blogging or commenting or do I clean up the kitchen? (If you have left me a comment and I haven't responded I guess you know that the kitchen or laundry is winning this week! Though I do appreciate all your comments and emails and feel bad when I don't get back to you!!!)

It's a dance. Finding the right balance. It's a dance, between this person who needs you and that person who needs you. Between keeping the house running smoothly enough and yet finding time to be with those you love.

This week I pray that I will find the melody in the dance and make my home sing!

The Way To My Heart Is Through My Gas Tank

I hate getting gas. Now, before you jump to conclusions let me tell you that I am not being indelicate.

I mean I hate putting gas in my car. Yes, hate is a strong word, but I would do practically anything to avoid it.

When I'm driving in my car I don't want to have to get out unless I am at my destination. To have to go to the gas station and get OUT just seems like such a waste of purpose. You are getting out of the car but you're not actually going anywhere......just a few feet.

Then you have to stand around and wait. Or go back into your car and sit around and wait. But then you have to go back out again and finish up. Not fun.

Besides, if it's winter it's COLD out there! If it's summer it's HOT out there!

I remember before I was married (and sometimes even after) I would let the gas practically run out before I'd even consider filling it up again.

Once I was giving my boss a ride home in my car and it DID run out of gas. She had to call her hubby to come rescue us.

Driving my car was always a gamble. How far could I go before I ran out of gas?

After we married I discovered that my hubby did not like playing this game. I don't know why. I had played it for years and never tired of it. I guess hubby did not like living on the edge.

So my sweet hubby took over the chore of putting gas in my car. I was very happy to hand that over to him. Happy, I was ecstatic!

Amazingly enough, he also expected me to tell him when my car needed gas. I mean, really folks, couldn't he read its mind? I'm supposed to tell him when the tank needs filling? Do I have to do everything?

I still have to gas up my car sometimes, but mostly my husband does it. The way to a man's heart may be through his stomach but the way to my heart is through my gas tank.

Making Your Home Sing: Work Your System!

I would love to tell you whether or not I finished my to-do list but frankly, I can't find it! It is lost in a sea of paperwork.

Did you know that an effective filing system is not effective if you don't use it? Did you know that a fridge full of food does not a dinner make if you don't cook it? Did you know that having your laundry sorted doesn't really do much good if it doesn't actually get into the washer?

I have a filing system. I have a good cleaning routine that works and keeps my house clean. I have a meal planning system. I have a laundry plan.

The thing that is missing from all these systems is me! If I don't do the work, the system doesn't work.

I can blame the system and say "menu planning doesn't work" or "this budgeting system is a failure" or "having a cleaning routine is not working out" or "I can't find a thing, this filing system is worthless."

But in reality, I am failing the system, the system isn't failing me.

In order to get something else done, I will let the paperwork pile up. In order to mop all the floors, I will let the laundry go.

If I just keep up a little each day, and do the things that I know need doing, I can get further ahead and get more done, not less! But......I have to do it. It won't get done by itself.

I just need to remember what my priorities are, and not let myself get sidetracked.

This week, I really need to get back to basics with the organizing principles that I know work for me. So this is how I will make my home sing this week!

The Marriage of Chocolate And Peanut Butter

You know how sometimes you are going on lack of sleep or busy or you're just plain tired out and so you're running on auto-pilot?

Or maybe you are trying to cook dinner, talk to your husband, answer the doorbell, run the dishwasher and feed the dog all at the same time?

It's amazing how many strange things can happen when you're multi-tasking. I am convinced that is how the idea of putting chocolate and peanut butter together was born.

Some hormonal woman was probably standing in her kitchen, staring at her cupboard and wondering if she should eat chocolate or peanut butter, because you know, she couldn't have both, because no one had ever thought of that before. That would just be too EWWWWWW!

So the phone rings and it's her mother-in-law with a question. Then her whiny toddler pulls at her leg.

In desperation the tired mom thinks "protein" and starts eating some peanut butter.

Then, while listening to her mother-in-law, she decides that maybe her child would like a taste of chocolate, so she gives the toddler some chocolate and then pops some chocolate into her own mouth, forgetting that she's already chewing on some peanut butter.

The rest, as they say, is history. A marriage made in heaven. I don't know about you but I did not get an invitation.

Chocolate and peanut butter together. A new taste sensation is born.

That's how it all happened. I am sure of it.

From a tired mom who wasn't paying attention.

The other night I was trying to clean up the kitchen after dinner, feed the dogs, and manage to have an intelligent conversation with my hubby all at the same time.

You wouldn't think that would be too hard but let me tell you, there are days........

Anyway, while talking to my hubby, and trying to avoid stepping on the dogs who were begging for dinner, I got out the plastic container of dishwashing detergent and proceeded to fill up the dishwasher dispenser. Or so I thought.

It wasn't until the first few pieces of dog food fell out that I realized I had grabbed the plastic container of dog food instead.

What happened was that physically I had decided to feed the starving dogs first, so I grabbed the dog food container. But nobody told my mind that. So mentally my mind still thought I was going with the whole putting soap in the dishwasher idea, so that's why I tried to clean my dishes with dog food.

It doesn't have the whole chocolate and peanut butter impact but I suppose it is creative! My dogs, however, were not amused.

This is yet another one of those weeks where I just don't have a blog post for the meme. I started on it and got called away and just never got back to it. Now it's late and my bedtime and I figured I'd better get this post up.

Also, I am behind in my blog reading so I still have several of your links to visit from last week's meme. I'm not quite sure how I will be making my home sing this week, but catching up on the links you all posted will be one of the things I will be doing!

I also have a couple of new recipes I am thinking of trying, as well as working at getting my to-do list crossed off.

I love my to-do list. I love it because I love to mark things off of it when they are finished. I keep a running list and just add things to it as they come up.

So, this week I will also be making my home sing by working on my to-do list.

Sometimes I think it should be called a "Don't" list because some things sure seem to stay on that list a long time........
