MAKING YOUR HOME SING MONDAY: SUMMER OVERLOAD

Making your home sing Mondays



Yes, it is time for the Making Your Home Sing Monday meme! Every day you are doing something to make your house into a home for yourself and your family (if you have one). My point with each Monday post is, what are you doing or going to do today to make your home sing? It can be an attitude or an action. Motivation, our attitude, baking, encouraging our husband or children (if we have either one), organization, cleaning, saving money....the opportunities are endless.

Ladies (and the three gentlemen that told me they read this blog from time to time, hey guys!), summer is officially here. When summer comes something happens to me. I make big, big big, big, big plans for things I want to accomplish over the summer.

I make lists of things I think would be fun to do it as a family, I make a list of projects that I want to accomplish as a family, I make a list of personal projects that I want to accomplish (as in giving the house a good ole' spring cleaning....only in summer).

I have plans to read books, garden, maybe paint a birdhouse or two, painting the railing or redo the bathroom, exercise, go for long walks or bike rides, yard sales, bbq's with friends, solve the world's problems, build a rocket that can go into space for a lot cheaper.....blah, blah, blah.

What usually happens at the end of the summer is that I am underwhelmed with all I've accomplished. I feel like the summer flew by, I didn't get everything done that I wanted, and I end up feeling very frustrated, and sometimes I feel like a failure.

Sometimes I feel guilty for the fun and relaxation that I did have, because it mean that I wasn't being "productive." Sometimes I feel guilty for being to "productive" and not relaxing enough!

I am very detail oriented. You probably don't know that about me, especially when I type in a hurry. But I am. I like to be organized, and I am a planner. I like to be prepared, people, down to the last detail.

So relaxing and just flying-by-the-seat-of-my-pants (who made that up, anyway?) doesn't really work well with me. I like to have a plan. I want to accomplish something. I need to accomplish something. I have to accomplish something!!!!!

Having my little plan, and marking off my little lists puts me in my happy place! If you don't believe me just ask any of the people that know me well. Sadly, they will tell you it's true....sigh! Frankly, I'm surprised the Five Moms didn't boot me out the first week, after having to read my 5,000 emails a day obsessing over every little detail. (But I'm glad they didn't, love you gals!)

So, here is my plan for making my home sing, and yes it does sort of defeat my purpose to have a plan.......ironic, isn't it?

First, I am going to try and have reasonable expectations for my summer. I am going to be doing a Summer Cleaning Frenzy (because I enjoy that sort of thing).

Soon I will also be posting a link on my sidebar to all the Summer Cleaning Frenzy Friends and to their room of the week list as well.

I am also going to try and have a reasonable balance between fun and projects this summer. So that at the end of the summer, my family will still be speaking to me, my friends will still be speaking to me, my dogs will still be speaking to me, and I will still be speaking to me!

MORE SUMMER CLEANING FRENZY INSTRUCTIONS

I don't think I was very clear on the Summer Cleaning Frenzy instructions....sorry! It was getting late and I was tired, lol!

1. Pick one room that you want to deep clean or reorganize, redecorate or whatever.

2. Walk around and make a list of what you feel needs doing in that room. Look here if you want to see one of my lists.

3. Post your list on your blog. It would be lovely if you'd link back to my blog in case anybody else wants to join us, but you don't have to.

4. Leave me a comment or send me an email telling me the day you posted your cleaning list, so that I can make a link to it. Please tell me what name you want me to use for the link (i.e. your name or your blog name). If you don't tell me, I will just use your blog name. Please send me the information by midnight Thursday, 6/4. Otherwise it won't get in for that week.

Next Saturday (6/6), I will then post a list of all the people who are participating in the Summer Cleaning Frenzy, along with their blog link to their cleaning list.


I will also have a link on my right sidebar to the post listing all who are participating in the Summer Cleaning Frenzy. That way, you can click on the post and then follow a link to whoever's blog you wish to visit! I won't do individual links to everybody's blog on my sidebar, just one link to the post (that has all the individual links). But all you have to do is click that post and you can see everyone's names.

You can take as long to finish your list as you want. If it takes you longer than a week, so be it. If you finish in a week, awesome and on to the next one! You can take before and after pictures if you wish.

You can edit your post on your blog to check off or cross off the things you've done, to show off your accomplishments! You can leave comments on each other's posts (and I encourage you too) or leave a comment on the Summer Cleaning Frenzy update post that I will do each Saturday. You can update there if you wish.

Every time you finish a room and start a new room, just do steps 1-4 again, and then I will post a new update each Saturday, with links to any of the new rooms that you all are starting on. If I don't get an update, I will assume you are working on the old room and leave the link to last week's room, until I get an update.

New people can join along each week, as long as they do the post and leave me a comment so I can update the participants list.

This can really go pretty fast, if you think about it. Think what you can do in just fifteen minutes....you can dust the baseboards, or dust all the lampshades and picture frames, etc. Remember, you are only working in one room at a time.

You can do alot in one room in a week! Go at your own pace, set your own rules, and have fun! I am going to try and do a room a week, for myself, just to get through this. I don't want it to last all summer. However, I will give the kitchen two weeks, instead of one.

I will post the first participant's list on Sat. 6/6. You all are welcome to get started on your list this week, as soon as you get your list up. Or you can begin on it 6/6 when the particpant's list is posted. It's up to you. Please email me if you have any questions!

SUMMER CLEANING FRENZY

If you decide to join me, do a post on your blog with your list within this next week. Choose the one room you're going to work on that week and make a list of the stuff you plan on doing in it and post it to your blog. Then leave me a comment on the day you posted your post (or email me the day you did it). The last day to get this to me for next Saturday's post will be next Thursday, 6/5.......now, wasn't that confusing?!

Your list can be a small one, long one, whatever you want. It's up to you. It's your list of stuff you'd like to work on that week.

The only reason for posting on your blog is so that I can do a link to your cleaning checklist, no other reason. If you don't leave me a comment, I won't ever know that you're doing this so I can't add you to the link list of participants.


I will then do an update on my blog next Saturday with a post listing a link to all the people participating in the cleaning frenzy, with a link to your cleaning list. Please let me know what name you want me to link to, your first name or the name of your blog. That way we can have fun encouraging one another and reading one another's lists.


Each week we can post a new list of the next room we're working on, if we want. Or we can stay in that room an extra week and then select a new room the following week. We can even post updates or encouragement in the comments. I will put a link on my right sidebar to the post with all the people involved so we can always find each other.


I'm not trying to do anything radical here or make a big deal of it, and I really won't mind if noone is interested. Trust me, I won't be hurt if noone responds. It may be just me, or just two of us. Just thought if anybody was going to be working on some cleaning projects this summer, we might as well have fun working together!

FRONT PORCH/ENTRY AND HALLWAY CLEANING LIST

Periodically I will be posting my cleaning list for the summer. I will do one room at a time, top to bottom, and be giving it a good thorough cleaning. I will also be updating it as I go, until everything is crossed off (or deemed unnecessary). I am starting with the Front Porch and the Entry hall as that is the first thing everyone sees. It's also pretty easy to do!

Ordinarily I would use this time to also address needs such as repainting or repairing, whatever. But for now I am going to stick to my standard cleaning list. This is a standard cleaning list that I have used for years. Believe it or not, I like to do this at least once or twice a year! Note like to do, doesn't mean do do (no pun intended.....lol!)

I usually do one room a week, and work for perhaps fifteen minutes to a half hour a day, sometimes an hour just to push it through, it depends on what's needed. The kitchen usually takes two weeks as I go through all the cupboards and drawers, and reorganize them. However, it goes faster each year as I scale down on my kitchen supplies that I don't really use, lol!

Sometimes it can go faster as some of the work has already been done during my regular weekly cleaning so I can just mark it off as done by either me or my kids.

Please understand I am not trying to impress you. I don't always get everything done on this list. This is just a guideline for what I would like to accomplish in order to give the house a good thorough cleaning. And no, I don't expect you all to be horribly interested in this. I'm just doing it for me for accountability! Feel free to join me with your own accountability list and we can motivate each other!

This picture was taken a few years after my husband and I got married but before we had kids. I selected it not just for the hair, but because of the shirt I was wearing. I know it will be hard to believe, but at the time, I loved this shirt! Seriously, I wore it as often as I could!!!!!

It was my favorite shirt to wear with jeans. Not just because it was comfy. I also thought the zebra-like print was cool. Look, our shirts are even almost matching!!!! I am not sure if that was intentional or not, but I doubt it.

By the way, no, my husband is not carrying a purse. It's a camera case. And yes, I am wearing a lightweight coat even in the sunshine, while my hubby is wearing short-sleeves. Even back then I was always cold!

ARE YOU A SPONGE OR A DISHRAG PERSON?

One night a few weeks ago, while I was cleaning up the kitchen, I had a life altering moment. You know what I mean. One of those defining moments where you stop and go, "Oh, so that's why I do it this way!"

The light dawns, and suddenly a whole new world of knowledge is revealed. You may wonder what this has to do with the title question "Are you a sponge or a dishrag person?" but hang in there, I'm getting to it.

I am a sponge person. Some people are dishrag people. I am a sponge person. When I clean up my kitchen I use sponges, never dishrags, to clean. Do they still even call them dishrags? Even though they're brand new and not rags? Or maybe they call them dishcloths?


The sponges are also so easy to clean. Just pop them into the microwave (wet, of course) or the dishwasher to sterlize them and they are good to go!

I just don't like dishrags. I have a friend who loves them. I don't like them because whenever I used to use them, somehow, some way, water would drip down my hand, down my wrist, and into my open, waiting sleeve and up my arm. Yuck! I just despise that!


You were expecting me to use the word "hate" weren't you? Well, I like to keep things hoppin' around here and surprise you and shake things up ever so often. Wouldn't want to get to predictable you know! You also forgot how much I love to use the little print didn't you? Isn't it precious? Didn't you remember that I love to type like this? Seriously, I could do this all day and not get tired. Get a headache, maybe....but not tired.



Errrrr......Back to the blog in progress, I really have no idea how the water would run up my arm either, because doesn't that defy gravity? It's not like I wash dishes with my arms raised over my head, either, you know. So how does that happen? I have no idea. But I am a drip-magnet. Water down the sleeve, every time.


BTW, you don't even want to know how many times I have washed dishes and got my sleeves wet. Not to mention the front of my shirt. Not sure how I managed that either. Guess I am just one big drip.


Just to clarify, I practically wash my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. At least that's what my family teases me about. I do a serious rinse, people!!!!!

I also wear dishwashing gloves whenever I wash dishes. I know some people who don't. They just wash and rinse away. Glove-free. I use gloves because you never know when you may be asked to step in and perform major surgery on your kitchen floor. After all, I just want to be prepared, people.

Deep down I probably always wanted to be a surgeon and this is as close as I'm ever going to get to it. However, I really think it's probably because my hands get chapped so easily.


So, back to the extremely important question: Are you a sponge or a dishrag person? And why? o.k. so that's two questions......

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MOMMY

I was thinking about some of the experiences of being a mommy. You know what I mean? This is what it means to me:

It means letting your child play outside in the fenced backyard because he/she is finally "old" enough, and peeking out the window every two seconds to make sure they're "safe."

It means watching your child fall down after their first steps and wanting to rush over and pick them up, even though you know that they need to learn to get up on their own.

It means grieving the passage of going from being called "mommy" to "mom."

It means looking at everything possibly as "this is the last bottle," or "the last baby" or even "the last diaper."

It's hearing the "mommy, let ME do it" and wishing you didn't have to.

It's watching your precious child get a bruise or a cut and wanting to weep along with them.

It's watching someone hurt your child's feelings and just feeling so upset that your child is hurting and wondering if you should get involved or let them handle it.

It's knowing that there are just some things that mommy or daddy can't make all better.

It's wishing that you could just rock them, or hold them until they fall asleep in your arms again.

It's wishing that you could follow after them all their lives.

It's playing endless games of Candyland.

It's sharing the "magic" of their learning to read.

It's reading endless bedtimes stories, and even then it's not enough as there is always a request for "just one more, please mommy?"

It's endless requests for water at bedtime.

It means waiting forever for them to say their first words, and then there are times when you wish they'd just be quiet and go to sleep.

It means accepting that there will be a time when you have to share them with the ones they marry someday.

It means knowing that they will leave the nest, forever taking your heart with them wherever they go.

It means remembering that you are more than just a mommy. You are a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. As they grow and get older and it seems like they "need" you less, it's remembering that they will always need your love and support. Your life will go on, it will just be a new season.

It's what you have been preparing them for from babyhood. To spread their wings and fly on their own. Don't you just wish that we could fly under them?

To catch them in case they look like they are about to stumble or fall? Don't you truly wish that we could fly under them? I am so thankful that God does.

"He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge...." Psalm 91:4a (NIV).

NO GOOD DONUT GOES UNPUNISHED

First, I am also blogging at Five Moms & a Blog today so please pop over for a visit when you're done here! It's time for a good ole' confessional!

Second, I've been having fun with my new camera. People see me coming and run away (well, to be honest, they did that before I had a camera too), but I can stalk with the best of 'em. Not to long ago we helped with a fundraiser to raise money for the youth at church. We had a yard sale but it was by donation only, no prices. The clothing and items were free and if people wanted to make a donation they could.


Workers began arriving early, hooked up to their Starbucks IV and ready to work. See the smiles on their faces? That's because they have their coffee and all is right with the world. You want to see them frown? Take their coffee away........they can get ugly real fast..... Trust me, you don't want to see it. It's terrifying.



People at church will do almost anything for donuts. Seriously. All you have to do is tell them that you are bringing donuts and they will drop everything and come to the church and help you do whatever you need to do. No questions asked. They could be right in the middle of surgery, in labor, at a wedding, or cooking dinner but if you promise donuts......they drop everything and they are there. These two are newlyweds so they're still sharing. Give them a year or two and then it's every donut man for himself.



This is my friend Rhonda's husband. I'm hoping that he is imparting his wisdom to my son. However, I fear he is imparting his finely-honed fashion sense......nice hat. This is my friend Rhonda's husband, he is a real snappy dresser. I am hoping he teaches my son everything he knows about dressing for success. Ignore the hat. Nice hat.



My friend Mocha Momma is working hard, as you can see. I am sure she needed at least an hour's rest after her strenuous workout there. Can't you just see the sweat dripping off her brow? I don't know how she managed something so heavy. She must do strength training.



As you can see my hubby and I are hardly working working hard soaking up the sun, with a little help from our friends in the background. What, me work? Puh-lease! Somebody has to supervise the chocolate donuts with this crowd around! Notice the Grumpy sweatshirt I'm wearing? That should tell you something about my personality. I am not kidding when I say just give me the chocolate and noone will get hurt. Try. Me.



Rhonda and her husband and their daughter decided to play dress-up. Her hubby grabbed a sweater to small for him and we're really not to sure about Rhonda's outfit. Most people take it off the hanger first but Rhonda is partial to hangers. Me too. Especially blue hangers. Maybe she'll start a new fad and everyone will wear the clothes and the hangers too. Saves you trouble when you need to hang it up later. She is such a visionary.


No job is to little, and no worker is to small. We put everybody to work! Get moving baby girl, no more breaks. Work it! Work it!!!!! Nap? Who needs a nap?




All work and no play makes for a dull day. Suddenly we had several models modeling the clothes. Would you hire them? I guarantee they will work for Starbucks and donuts. Check out the fancy duds! I think my son is channeling Don Johnson/Miami Vice with that bright yellow blazer.

MAKING YOUR HOME SING: WHEN MOM IS SICK

Making your home sing Mondays

Welcome to the "Making Your Home Sing Monday" meme! Glad you're here!

I have to admit that I have not been concerned about making my home sing, lately. Somehow when you're sick and not feeling well, your priorities change. Some colds affect my asthma more than others, and I find myself needing to take it easy.

In the past I would drive myself to do the things that needed doing, meals, dishes, laundry, picking up.....but I think that sometimes that only succeeded in making my recovery take longer. Sometimes, making the home sing when you're sick means taking care of momma, and letting the home slide as much as possible. Sometimes it means lowering your expectations for awhile.

Usually when the kids are young and mom is sick, she still needs to keep up with the kitchen and meals and caring for the kids. Not an easy thing when she's sick. Who cares for mom and the kids when mom is sick and dad is at work all day? The answer: mom....or grandma if she's available.

Mom will often ignore her own needs and wear herself out meeting the needs of her kids and her family. She will force herself to try and stick to her regular routine, even at the risk to her health. But Mom needs to realize that sometimes she just has to cut herself some slack, and let go what she can, rest when she can, and take care of herself. Because she matters too.

My kids are older now and so they are able to fend for themselves. My hubby will usually take over the meals when I'm sick but for some reason, I feel the need to be out there making sure the kitchen is clean. Old "mom" habits die hard and it's hard to let go of the reigns and the control. It's hard to let someone else take care of you. This week I haven't needed to do as much as hubby took over the kitchen cleaning and the meals.

However, I have a fairly messy home right now. I have not been doing my usual picking up. The pick up isn't even other people's stuff, for the most part. It's MY stuff that I left out.

Usually I will do a quick pickup, even when I'm sick. I will force myself to get up and do something for five minutes. Even five minutes is an improvement.

But I just haven't been doing that much these last couple of days. So for me, I will make my home sing by just trying to put everything back in order. I will let my asthma and energy guide me, and rest if and when I need to, and not push to hard. I will do a little at a time and get everything back in order as soon as I can.

Sometimes, for me, making my home sing is just about having a comfortable, clean, singing, smiling home. It makes things less stressful and chaotic and more restful to have things all neat and orderly. It's no fun to look at a mess all day, a least in my opinion. So this week, as I feel better, I am all about restoring some order around here and banishing the sickies.

I want my home to be warm and welcoming, clean and inviting. I don't want it to look like nobody cares about it. So this week it's time to banish the "sick room" look and put everything back in it's proper place. It may not seem exciting or much, but it will make me happy to do this!

I HAVE SUNK TO A NEW LOW

I have sunk to a new low. I have taken over my husband's laptop and am using two computers at once. I kid you not. I am that pathetic.

However, I don't want to waste time. I cannot see my followers on my computer. All I see is a big white box. So in order to visit my follower's blogs and keep in touch I have to borrow my hubby's computer when I can.

If my followers leave a comment (hint, hint) then I can easily and quickly just trackback through the comment. If not, then I have to use extreme measures and tie my husband up and steal his computer and borrow my husband's computer.

Except that visiting followers on his computer is very slow. It takes forever to load. In fact, the computer is slow today. Who wants to just sit there and watch it load?

Don't you judge me. Don't you sit there and tell me that I should be cooking, or cleaning, or doing laundry or something.

I am sick. I have a cold.....cough......cough.....hack......sniff.....snort.....and playing on the computer is um.......alot more fun than cleaning and is helping me um.......breathe better. Yeah, that's right. It's clearing my nasal passages. Who knew?

Like I said, I have sunk to a new low.

IGNORE THIS TOO

Having problems here. My posts are showing up on your readers and dashboards over 30 minutes after I post them. Just trying to figure this out. Please ignore this one too. It's all driving me nuts.

PLEASE IGNORE, TESTING AGAIN

o.k., I am testing my feed because that last post didn't show up on google reader or on somebody's dashboard until quite awhile after I did it so I'm just checking my feed. Sorry.

WARNING! TECHNICAL RANT COMING.

O.k., I hate to be a complainer again, but somebody just stop me next time I attempt to do anything technical. Seriously. Just. Stop. Me.

So I tried to burn my feed to feedburner and somehow I wound up with four feeds. How does somebody DO that? Nobody but me could do it. I thought that the other ones didn't "take" because of the error message I was getting.

So now I have four feeds???? Who needs that?

I just heard that RSS feedburner was apparently very helpful to people so thought I'd switch to that. It was recommended. Then I decided I wanted that cute little feedburner button that shows the number of readers. I guess it's my fault for being vain......Carly Simon's song comes to mind.

So now I have no idea what to do, and wonder if people will continue to be able to read me in their google reader. I'll just disappear and they'll never know what happened to me.....sniff.....snort.....waaaahhhhh!

I hate computers. In fact, I'm not so fond of toasters either........

Most of you probably have no idea what I'm refering to. Just close your ears and ignore my wild rants and I will eventually go away.......well, I hope not......but you never know with the level of my technical skills......sigh!

I see something techy and I want it, I gotta have it, I don't know how I lived without it before!!!! Ah, greed. Well, greed and the fact that I am so sure that I can do it....only I can't.

I want someone to come to my house right now and straighten me out straighten this whole thing out. Hurry up. It's getting late. Whhhiiinnnneee!

Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3

I was attempted to burn my feed to feedburner so I could get that cute little feedburner box that others have. However, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing even though I tried to follow the instructions. I got no box that shows on there and don't know if I messed up the google feeds or not. So just testing! Hope I didn't lose all my google readers or mess up the feed.

Ugh, I can't stand tech stuff and don't know why I try....

I totally spaced on what day it was, and so I totally forgot to scan the picture that I had selected. So in a last minute panic I grabbed one that my husband already had in his files to use for the meme.

This one was taken when I was about 18 or 19. As you can see, I was really rockin' the Farrah Fawcett 'do. I loved that hairdo and it was fairly easy to maintain. All I needed was a blowdryer and a round brush, a curling iron, and about a gallon of hairspray.

CONVERTING THE WORLD ONE BLOG AT A TIME

Yay! Another bloggy sister has entered the world! I keep forgetting to tell you that my sweet friend Nannette has just started her own blog here! I am determined to convert my friends, one person at a time.......mwahhhaaaaaaa (insert evil maniacal laugh here please).

MOLDY LEFTOVERS 101

Sometimes, I stick things in the back of the fridge to die. You just need to know that about me.


Because I would never waste food, ever. But after all, you can't expect me to eat something that is all green or moldy can you? I mean, that isn't healthy at all......


We are usually pretty good at finishing our leftovers. We like leftovers. I plan for leftovers sometimes.


But sometimes, you just aren't in the mood to eat something. That day, that night, or evvvver! But you can't throw it away. You can't! Because that would be wasteful. So you play mind games.


You just stick it in the back of the fridge and you forget about it. On purpose. You make a choice to forget it every single day. And you have to check on it to make sure it's still good. Because you can't throw it out if it's still good. Instead, you have to lie to yourself that you'll eat it tomorrow.

Be sure and check it every single day though. Don't forget this step, it is very important. Check every single day to make sure that it is still good. Then tell yourself that for sure, you will eat it tomorrow. That will make you feel better and like you're not lying, even though you are.....you totally are. You just don't realize that you are.

Finally the day comes and it is green and/or moldy. The smell is putrifying (love that word!) and stinking up your whole fridge. Now you can throw it away.


Not only can you throw it away, but you can feel justified about it. You can even mourn its loss. "Oooooooh, I was going to eat that!!! Oh man! I can't believe it's spoiled! What is happening to food nowadays? Nothing lasts very long. That's my faaaaavorite! I love ________."

You can mourn loudly and weep big phony tears about it. You can write love songs about it. You can weep into your pillow about it, or write heart-rendering poetry about it. You can pick a fight with your husband or best friend about it. Frankly, I don't care how you handle it.


Just know that you can now throw the food away without feeling guilty about it. Because noone is going to blame you for tossing food that is all yucky and moldly. Noone. Not even your mom. Not even the dog, because when it's that bad that even the dog won't eat it.....you know it's baaaaad!

In fact, if you're not sure about it, let the dog sniff it. If he gets all excited, put it back in the fridge; if he turns his nose up at it, throw it away. However, do keep in mind that some dogs eat out of garbage cans and drink out of toilets.......so their opinion may not be trustworthy.


This will not work with chocolate, however. You can't just stick chocolate in the fridge and expect to forget about it. No, it will be calling you. You will gain fifteen pounds every time you open the fridge door and just smell it.

Nope, with chocolate you have to bury it in the back yard under five feet of dirt. Even that won't stop some people. Why do you think I'm walking around with dirt all over my face all the time?????

WHY I BLOG

I just want to make sure that my intent behind my blog is understood. I blog for fun, but I also do it because I have a heart for women. I desire to encourage you (and myself) in our lives as women, and the many roles we play: individually as a woman, or as a wife or a mother.

If I can uplift you, give you food for thought, or encourage you in your day to day life, or make you laugh when you leave here, or just make you feel that you have found a friend or something interesting to read, then I am pleased to do that. If I can encourage you in your marriage, or your parenting I am happy. If I can encourage you spiritually or point you to Jesus, I am even more thrilled.

From time to time I post funny things, whether it's about hairy legs, my dog, or whatever. I think we all need to laugh from time to time.

When I post about the Lord, I take that responsbility very seriously. I practically agonize over each word, so that my intention comes across well, so that any scriptural references are within context, and so that my point gets across and can't be misconstrued (at least I hope not)

Just because I don't post about Him every day does not mean that He is not the most important Person in my life. Because He is. He is my Hope, my Strength, and my Savior. Without Him, I could not go on.

I just want you to know that my intent is not to be a deeply spiritual blog, as I do not want the pressure of doing that, nor am I scholared enough to do that.

But please don't ever mistake my jokes or "fluff" posts and think that that is all I care about. I want you to know how important my Savior and my God is to me, and even though you may not see it, as such, in every post, I want you to know that He is the thread that holds me together.

WORKS FOR ME: CARDFILE CLEANING SYSTEM

I have said before that I am a list maker. I love routines. I really do. I love the satisfaction of accomplishing something and being able to check it off as being "done." So much more satisfying then having nothing to show for it....well, except the job being done, of course.

I have my cleaning routines (here and here), and that really does help keep me on track. As long as I'm doing it and not slacking off, of course. Not that I would ever slack off, not me.....yeah, right.

But sometimes, I get bored with my cleaning routine. Like now. And if that happens, then I am not so apt to keep things up as well as I'd like too. It's much more fun to find something else to do that doesn't involve cleaning. So if I get bored with my routine then things start to fall apart around here because I'm not being as diligent as I should be.

So ever so often I like to shake things up a bit and return to my cardfile. This was something that I first heard about when I read the book Sidetracked Home Executives by Pam Young and Peggy Jones. If you haven't read this book yet I encourage you to, you should find it very helpful, you surely will find it fun!



Instead of working off a list, you work off a rotating index card file system. Here is a picture of mine. I have had it for years and years. The cards are something tangible that you can see and move around as needed, very flexible. You will need a set of colorful index cards, a set of monthly index divider cards, and a set of 1-31 numbered dividers.





First you walk through your home and decide how often a job needs to be done. You decide what chores will be daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonally. Next you decide how many days a week you are going to devote to cleaning. You may decide to have one moderate cleaning day and one big cleaning day, with a few mini cleaning times throughout the week.

Or you may have three moderate cleaning days, and no cleaning at any other time. Or just one BIG cleaning day. It's up to you. Then you make up your cards and file the cards on your chosen cleaning days. For the monthly cards you will want to spread them out throughout the month.

This will even work with the Flylady system if you file your cards according to her zones.


The cards are color-coded as well so that you can see at a glance what is daily (yellow), weekly (blue), or monthly (white). There are personal (pink) cards as well, for personal things or errands. Of course, you can color code your cards however you want. This is what I did.

I put a "D" in the upper right corner for chores that are delegated to my kids.

Here's how it works. Each morning when you wake up you check your cards. After you've completed your daily chores, you would file the daily cards under the next day's date. The weekly cards would be filed one week from the day that you did the chore. The monthly cards you would file under the next month's divider.

Since many years ago I selected Friday as the day that I mop the floors, that "mop" card is filed under this Friday's date. Then, once it's done, it will be filed under the next Friday's date. If you have to skip it, you mark the date that you skipped it on the card. You really don't want to skip a chore more than three times in a row, if possible.

I confess that I don't really need a card to remind me to unload the dishwasher, do laundry, clean bathrooms or sweep the floor. However, there is something very tangible and satisfying about being able to select a card, do the chore, and file the card away! Not only that, but they are a great and fun motivator! It's like racing the timer, only you're beating the cards!

So, in order to keep things lively around here, and liveable, I like to vary the routine ever so often. It keeps things a bit fun and a bit more interesting, just by doing it differently. So this is what I will be doing this week. Getting back in the box.

ARE YOU CLEANING HARDER OR SMARTER?

First things first. Pardon me for mentioning this yet again, but today I will also be blogging over at Five Moms and a Blog. I would really love it for y'all to pop over and pay us a visit. After you're done here first of course, lol!

If we learn by example, then we either learned to clean by watching our parents clean, or we read lots of books that told us how to do it, or we figured it out ourselves. Somewhere along the way, we developed a cleaning "style" and some cleaning "rules."


How much thought have you put into your cleaning "style?" Is it working for you or does it need tweaking? Are you cleaning out of habit or have you put thought into it?


I gotta tell you, I know that it is far faster and easier to clean if I remain in the same room. I know that if I bring my cleaning supplies into the room with me, and a laundry basket to put out-of-place items in, and a garbage sack, my cleaning will go much faster. Every time I leave the room to put something away, I am increasing my work time as well as at risk for getting sidetracked.


But how many times do I just leave the room 2 or 3 times to get the cleaning supplies that I need? How many times do I leave the room to put something away, come back and grab something else, and then go off again to put that away......wasting steps and wasting time.

Also, I know that it is much easier if I spread out most of my cleaning during the week, so that on weekends I can work on special projects and things, or hardly do any cleaning at all. Whatever I choose.


I know this, and yet how many times have I been known to procrastinate and put off alot of cleaning till the weekend?

After all, what else do I have to do on a Saturday? Sure I can clean, do laundry, bake, shop, blah, blah, blah...It's not like I want to have any fun!


Honestly, I have been known to put off mopping my floors for longer than you want to know! They are scheduled every week, but that doesn't mean they always get done.

If you can walk across my kitchen and your feet don't stick to the floor in such a way that you have difficulty walking, that is a good thing. However, until such time that my family learns to levitate, I suppose I'll have to keep mopping the floors around here.

Anyway, it is interesting to look at how we clean and wonder how we got that way. Did we learn by example, experience, trial and error, or all of the above?

Do we clean the way that our mom did? Did she clean the way her mom did? Do we clean out of habit, without ever really examining things to see if our methods are working for us? Are we working harder or smarter?

Welcome to the "Making Your Home Sing Monday" meme! First, before we begin, let me remind you that our new blog Five Moms And A Blog is starting up today! I am blogging with four other gals (they are a hoot!) and it oughta be a blast so please join us!


Why can't a man be more like a woman? Isn't it amazing how different we are? When the kids were little, my hubby had an awesome talent of tuning them out. He wouldn't do it on purpose, but if he was focusing on something he just was oblivious to their call.

They would say "Dad. Dad. Dad" and he would just keep doing whatever he was doing, not even hearing them. Until I would say "Answer him!!!!!!!"

He also had the ability to sit and watch a t.v. show with a whole bunch of toys around him on the floor and it didn't phase him a bit. He could concentrate and enjoy the show without even noticing the toys.

For me, that was an impossibility. The toys were in my line of sight and I couldn't sit down and watch a t.v. show without cleaning up all the toys first. They were just to distracting to me and I couldn't relax and enjoy the show.

I couldn't concentrate on something when the kids were constantly talking away at me. I couldn't tune them out. The call "Mom?", made in the middle of the night, no matter how quiet would wake me up from a sound sleep. That's how Moms are wired.

My husband could leave the kitchen a mess and go and relax for the rest of the evening and it wouldn't bother him. The dishes screaming from the kitchen, the clothes crying out from the washing machine "Dry me! Dry me!" would be a siren song to me that he could not hear.

However, I could care less how high the lawn grows, and it drives my husband nuts to see it get over a quarter of an inch! He is always out there mowing, and if he can't mow because it's raining, he's wishing he could.

If the oil needs changing......who cares? If the bathroom sink needs fixing, yeah it's inconvenient but I can live with it. For my husband, however, he is just itching to get out to the car or under the sink and fix it.

If a bill needs paying, he can't put it off. He can no more put off his responsibilities than I can put off mine.

He has an amazing ability to focus and concentrate on one thing and block everything else out, and I have an amazing ability to focus on more than one thing at a time.....you may call it easily distracted but I prefer to call it "multi-tasking." And this is my blog so I win, ha!

Yet, sometimes, I expect him to act more like me. God made him a very special way. Yet still, I have been bothered at times that he just didn't "get" it.

Like, early in our marriage when I would talk to him about something that was bothering me, he would give me suggestions. He would want to "fix" it, and that would annoy me. I didn't want him to fix it. I just wanted him to listen to me!

From my husband's perspective he was wondering why I was coming to him with a problem if I didn't want him to fix it???? Do you see how male-female communication can get so messed up sometimes?

We expect our husbands to be like a woman! We expect them to react just exactly how we would react. We expect them to see danger in every corner when it comes to our children. We expect them to stop at the gas station and ask for directions. We expect them to just know what we're thinking instead of our having to tell them!!!

When my husband was sleeping and snoring as he occasionally has, I used to wake up and just glare at him. I was sure that somehow my glare would wake him up from a sound sleep.....I just knew that he could sense the power of my glare and wake up. Didn't work, however, a well placed elbow does wonders!

Sometimes, we are unfair to people. Whether they are our spouses, our children, our co-workers, friends, etc. Sometimes we expect them to think just like us. We expect them to act just like us. And when they don't, we are disappointed. Sometimes, we are even mad.

We put words and thoughts behind people's actions, many times unfairly. Just because our husbands don't think to do something, we can blow it all out of proportion and get mad. We can put words in our husband's mouth, words that they aren't even saying let alone thinking, and then we can get mad at them for it.....even though they never opened their mouths. We think that we know what they're thinking. How unfair is that? I don't even know what I'm thinking sometimes!

My husband always says "Don't infer evil intent." That means don't look at something someone did or said and infer evil into it. Don't judge them unfairly. Don't look at something they've done and decide that you know that they did it just to annoy or hurt you. Don't jump to a conclusion in your mind. Don't decide that you know their motivation behind their words or actions.

Sometimes when there is a lack of communication our minds will make up it's own scenario. And we can blow things way out of proportion due to our own insecurities.

Men are different from us. And I say thank you Lord! There is a reason that God made us differently. It is so that we complement one another. It is so that we can balance each other's strengths and weaknesses!

If we try to be thankful for those differences, and allow our husbands the freedom to be the men that God has created them to be, we will make our homes sing today and every day.

THE SECRET IS REVEALED......

Yesterday I mentioned my secret......and today is the day it will be revealed. But first, let me ask if I look like I've gained any weight lately? (pleaaaassssse, don't answer that). You can think it but don't answer it because you might hurt my feeling, and I only have one feeling left. The rest just up and went away.

Yes, recently I have given birth. Let me tell you, it was an exhilirating process. The cramping, the bloating, the cravings, the weight gain, the screaming in pain (oh wait, that was me). The insomnia, the wild mood swings, the roller coaster hormones, the throwing up (oh wait, that was me.)

The waiting is horrible............you push, and you sweat. You push and you whimper. You push and you grab the doctor by the throat and.......oops, again, that was me. The agonizing over the name. What do you name it. It has to have a name! What do you name it????? It has to have a name for goodness sake!!!!! You can't just call it "it!" Or even Cousin It!

Then comes THE BIG MOMENT. You are ready....you've been ready for nine months.....or maybe nine days.......whatever. You waddle in and say "I'm ready. Get this baby out of here!!!!"

They wheeled me in and......

.......out popped Erica, then Mimi, then Miti, then Tarah, then myself. What am I talking about? Well, these four lovely moms and I together have given birth to......



..........a blog! Yup! It's called Five Moms and a Blog....... Aren't we cute? Can you guess which mini-me is me? You'll have to go over to the blog to find out. Be sure and make your guess before you head over, though.

Why a blog with other moms? Why not? It's like getting together over a hot cup of coffee, frappacino, diet pepsi, cup of tea or whatever and just talking, laughing and having fun! Just as if you were with your girlfriends. And yes, there will be chocolate.

I will still be blogging here as well, so you're not getting rid of me that easily.

You know, there are just some things that you like to eat or drink. I have admitted before that I like chocolate. I do. It should be its own food group as far as I am concerned. Or maybe our nation's national........um........chocolate. Yeah, that's it. Just doing my part for our country!

I also have admitted that I prefer diet pepsi. Have no idea why as I used to be a coke drinker. Somewhere along the way I changed. I blame my husband. No reason. I just like to blame him now and then for things just to keep him on his toes. Don't want him to get to comfortable, you know....lol!

THE PRICE OF DEBT

Recently I ran into someone that I went to high school with. They were talking about their job and how their rent was raised and that they "only made $75,000 a year and that's not a lot of money."


Since when? I suppose if you make over $100,000 a year than no, $75 thousand isn't a lot of money compared to what you're used to. But if you look around you, there are many people who are living on far less than $75 thousand a year. They are supporting families on much less than $75 thousand a year. I read the average yearly salary is around $40,000 a year.


It just got me to thinking how people tend to live above their income, or right up to it anyway. They buy things they can't afford to pay full price for, so they buy it on credit. They go into debt to acquire the things they can't afford but want to have.

They furnish their homes on credit, buy their cars on credit, buy their clothes on credit, go on vacations on credit. As a country, we just seem to think that credit is the way to go.

If you can't afford it, that's o.k. You can still do it. Just use a credit card! There are people with fancy homes, fancy cars, fancy clothes, and they're broke!

Who are we trying to impress? Do we, as consumers, buy because we're trying to impress someone else, or ourselves? What are we trying to make up for? What need are we fulfilling by buying newer, bigger, better?

How did someone manage to sell consumers on debt? How did someone manage to persuade us that we really needed to buy things that we couldn't afford.....and make us o.k. with it? How did someone manage to persuade us that last year's model is obsolete and this newer model is much, much better.....and we bought into it?

What happened to living within your income, or better yet, below it? What happened to buying what you could afford? If you couldn't have it, you went without or you saved for it.

Now, the mentality is to live above your income, because that's what credit is for. Many people don't think twice about whipping out that credit card. They can "afford" it, right?

If you can't afford it now, what makes you think you can afford it later, when you're still paying for it and the newness of the item is worn off?

Can you afford the stress that being in debt brings? Can you afford the stress that comes from knowing that you can't retire because you have to continue working to pay off your bills? Can you afford the stress, guilt and despair that comes every month when the bills roll in? Can you afford to feel like a failure if you can't meet your obligations?


Nobody should have to feel like a failure. Nobody should have to feel guilt or despair over their debt. There is always hope. Always. It won't be easy, and there will be decisions to be talked over, choices to be made. But there is always hope. You got into debt, but you can get out of it again. You just have to make some changes.


Can you deprive yourself now of something that you want, in order to relieve yourself of major stress later? Can you say no to something now that you really want, in order to say yes to something later?


Can you make a list of things that you can do without, like a newer car or yet another vacation, and make do with an older car and inexpensive vacation, in order to meet your goal of being debt free? Do you really need yet another pair of cute shoes? Can you eat at home tonight instead of eating out? Can you drink water instead of drinking diet pepsi (ouch, now we're playing hardball here because I love me some diet pepsi).

Sometimes things happen, medical things, job loss, accidents, and people get into debt. But many, many times, we get into debt not by outside forces but by our own decisions and choices.

Nobody makes those decisions but us. We all make our own choices. We can choose to live above our means, within our means, or below our means.

We can choose debt or we can choose freedom. With the economy the way it is, and people losing jobs, there is still hope. We can make good choices for now that will impact our future in a better way. We can control our money instead of letting it control us.

WILLS - WHY WAIT?

Dave Ramsey, author of The Total Money Makeover and I are getting to be very good friends.....he just isn't aware of it yet.

I heard about his book all over blogland it seemed, and put it on hold at the library. I then waited forever for it but it finally came and I've been trying to read it in my spare time.

In one part, he says that estate planners say that 70% of people don't have wills. 70%! That seems huge to me.

My husband and I actually made wills before we had children. But after we had children it became very important to update it so that we could decide who would care for our children, in the event that we both passed on at the same time.

Seriously, do you really want the state deciding who will be raising your children? I didn't. I also didn't want people in my family scrambling at the last minute, grieving and trying to decide who would take them temporarily, while waiting for the state or someone in the family to make a permanent decision. Having a will makes the whole process easier on everybody, especially easier on your children.

When they were little, there came a point that my kids asked me what would happen to them if something happened to their daddy and I. Instead of saying "Oh, someone will take care of you" I was able to tell them specifically who would be caring for them. I think it relieved their minds, in a small way, just to know that there would be someone specific there for them.

I know this isn't exactly the most uplifting post. But it can be very uplifting in a way. I have never needed to worry about what would happen to my children after we were gone. I have always had the assurance that they would be loved and cared for, and their needs provided for.

I knew that they would be going to someone who loved and wanted them, and not just someone who made the decision while they were grieving. Sometimes, you can love someone a bunch, but feel that they may not be the best choice to take on the raising of your child.

What if two people come forward, willing to care for your children? Who makes the decision if you aren't there?

Having a will puts you in the position of being able to make a choice, instead of having the choice made for you after you are gone. True, the state has to approve, but I would imagine in most cases, they approve it.

Clearly I am not a professional here. I am just saying that if you haven't made a will, you may want to consider it. Whether you have children or not. It will make things much easier on those you leave behind!

I know when I die, I am going to heaven to be with Jesus. However, I would like to make things easier on my family after I'm gone!

MUSINGS AND MASHED POTATOES

Do you know that if you leave a little bit of mashed potatoes in a pan instead of washing the pot right away, that it will harden and make a bond and become one with the pan? Seriously, you could build bridges with that stuff and they would never fall apart. Do engineers even know that?

All the tons of money spent researching and planning in order to build better bridges, skyscrapers, and other buildings and all they really needed was a pot of dried up mashed potatoes.

All the steel, and welding, and hardhats and tired, long days, and all they really needed to do was just mix up a good ole' batch of taters. Who knew?

I wonder what other money-saving, world changing things I have here in my kitchen. Perhaps the dog hair on my floor can be used to transport people from one place to another.

After all, that stuff really has a way of getting around. It can even fly. I have found stray pieces of dog hair on the floor, on my clothes, on the kitchen counter, and once I even found one on a plate in cupboard (don't tell our friends that in case we ever want to invite them over for dinner).

10 THINGS I WISH MOMS CAME WITH

Over the years there have been a few things that I wished had come with being a mom. The big thing is you want that baby popping out with an instruction manual in its little hand....but that just doesn't happen.

Mine came out kicking and screaming. My oldest came out with a set of car keys in his hand, and my youngest had a remote control.

Here are some other things I wanted as a mom and reasons why that's probably not such a great idea:
  1. Eyes in the back of my head. Well, seriously...as moms do we really want to know what our little stinkers lovely children are up to? Like the time my then-eight year old decided to throw a 15 oz. can of tomato sauce at his then-four year old brother's head, "just to see if I could hit him." Isn't ignorance truly bliss???

  2. At least one extra set of arms. Great. Then we'd manage to fill those arms up too, and we'd still run out of hands! Not to mention can you imagine the cost of manicures for all those extra hands?

  3. No cramps. You can still have that....it's called menopause.....

  4. A baby who can talk and tell you what he wants instead of crying and you trying to figure out what he/she wants. Now think this through. This kid is going to be screaming at the top of his lungs "I am hungry!!!! I am wet!!!!!! I stink!!!!! Mooooooommmmmm! Feed me! Change me! Hold me!!!!

  5. Earplugs. You know, I have no problems with this one.

  6. A self-cleaning house. Got no problems with this one either, except what would we do all day? After all, if I don't have to spend time cleaning what will I do with the extra 23 hours and 57 minutes of the day?

  7. Chocolate as its own food group. The problem with this one, as I see it, is that I would neglect all the other food groups. Not only that, but I would probably not play nice and share either. I'm just sayin'........

  8. Not being able to change my mind. Sometimes it seems like I have trouble making up my mind. I make a decision, and then agonize over it, change my mind, and then change it back again. So I think that not being able to change my mind would be a good idea. Or maybe it wouldn't. Oh yeah, definitely a good idea. Well, on second thought maybe not. Still.....

  9. The ability to bend my legs at impossible angles in order to clip my toenails or shave my legs. Seriously. How are we supposed to reach those things? Before kids, no problem. After kids your stomach gets in the way. Yes, it does. That thing does not deflate all the way after the baby pops out. And how are we supposed to reach our feet when we're pregnant anyway???? I challenge any man to stick a basketball inside his shirt and then bend down and try to clip his toe nails. Ha!

  10. No roller-coaster hormone ride. Can you imagine what you'd be like if you didn't have those crazy hormones every month? Can you imagine what you'd be like if you didn't feel like pulling your hair out, howling at the moon, jumping out of your skin, howling at the moon (this bears repeating), crabbing one minute and crying the next. Can you imagine what you'd be like? Oh, yeah, I guess you'd be a man......

Have you ever wished for any of these things? Yeah, me neither.

MAKING YOUR HOME SING MONDAY: JUGGLING AND DROPPING THE BALL

Welcome to the "Making Your Home Sing Monday" meme.

Sometimes you're just to tired to make your home "sing." Sometimes, your life can get super busy and you can be pulled in several directions at once. You can't do everything. Something has to give.

That is one of the big frustrations of being a mom. How do you do it all? How do you manage it all? Where is the balance? What are your priorities?

Since my mom was ill and hospitalized I have been back and forth alot to visit her. The phone rings off the hook it seems, and there are things that need looked after. Not only that, but I still have to homeschool my youngest and I have had other outside responsiblities that I've needed to help with as well.

Welcome to the life of a mom. There is always something that needs doing. Someone or something that needs attention. Something that needs cleaning. Something that needs washing. Responsibilities inside and outside the home to look after.

Sometimes you can make choices to stay home and not go anywhere. That makes it easier to keep up with your responsibilities at home. But sometimes, you just can't do that. There are places you need to be (like visiting someone who is ill), or things you need to help with or whatever.

Sometimes, what makes my house sing is to let some things go for a time, if I need to. You will be thrilled to know that as I write this, I have discovered that I washed a load of laundry in the washer and totally forgot about it. It smells like it too! I have been pretty much in and out for the last couple of days so I totally dropped the ball on that one.

Frankly, I am o.k. with it. You can only juggle all the balls for so long. Eventually, you'll drop one. Sometimes, the way to make your house sing is to just accept that sometimes there are better choices to be made. Given a choice between visiting my mom and mopping my floor, I will choose my mom. Giving a choice between enjoying some time with my sons or windexing the mirrors, I will choose my kids.

That doesn't mean that the housework never gets done. We don't want to use our responsibilities as an excuse to not care for our home or family at all. Everyone is busy, there is always someone busier than you, and there is always someone who gets more done than you do, no matter how busy they are. It just seems to be that way sometimes.

So it doesn't mean I'm not going to ever do the housework. It just means that during busy times or times of stress, I am choosing to lower my expectations and just chill!
Dishes need to be done, meals need to get cooked, laundry needs to be processed. But if the floor doesn't get mopped, noone is going to experience any great degree of suffering over it (at least, I hope not, lol!). It'll get done eventually.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a stinky load of clothes to rewash and a sink full of dirty dishes to get to, and please whatever you do, don't open any doors.....

PLEASE PRAY FOR KYNDALL TODAY

There is a precious twelve year old girl, Kyndall, who needs your prayers right now. She was in a terrible boating accident today. She was badly hurt and is on a ventilator right now. There is bleeding in her brain, a fractured skull and fluid on her lungs.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Happy Mother's Day to every one of you who are moms out there. I hope that it will be a special day with your family today.

To those of you who are longing and waiting to be moms and hurting because you're not, I pray that this day you will be able to enjoy it anyway and celebrate your thankfulness for your own mom.

To those of you who have lost your moms, I pray for comfort and that today will be a day of wonderful memories for you.

Alicia is hosting Friday Photo Flashback again! This is the time to dig out all your old photos, dust them off, scan 'em and post 'em for everyone to enjoy!

I have mentioned my "big" hair in the past. In this picture it's not even all that big, but it's big enough so I gotta share.

There really isn't alot to say about this picture. I tried to color-coordinate by putting us in red, but otherwise didn't give much thought to the clothes. I just didn't want us to clash.

As anyone with young kids know, the main goal is to get your picture taken and hope that your child doesn't mess up the clothes before you take the picture or dissolve into tears during the picture. This day went pretty well, I think.

My older son got the idea of picture taking, but my younger one, just a baby, was a little confused by it all, lol! Please go here to see what everyone else is sharing!

THE GOOD OLE' DAYS....

I am a spoiled brat. Yes I am and you're not going to talk me out of it. When I think of how homemakers in the "olden days" had it, I have it good.

Imagine traveling across to the west in a covered wagon, leaving your family, perhaps forever behind, as you travel with your new husband. Good grief, I just moved a couple of blocks away from my parents when I got married.

Imagine knowing that you will probably never see them again. Knowing that letters took forever to get there, and there was no such thing as email (some of you just broke out into a cold sweat, I know it!). Knowing that you couldn't hop on an airplane (what's an airplane?) in an emergency.


Imagine having to beat your clothes against a rock or on a washboard to get them clean. Or washing them in a boiling pot of lye.


Imagine wearing the same clothes for a week (or more) and just changing your apron. Imagine having to do a huge spring cleaning every year because you really needed it after a long, hard winter.

Most people worked hard back then. Men, women, and even children. They didn't have electricity, fridges, stoves, microwaves, coffee makers, Kitchen Aids....none of the conveniences that we have now.


But you know what? Sometimes, those days look awful good to me. All of the family in one great room. Mom, dad, kids, grandma and grandpa perhaps. Spending the evening together reading, talking, laughing, sharing and loving one another. No outside distractions.

I know they worked hard back then, and they didn't have all the great appliances or medicines, etc. that we have today. But there are just some things about the "good old days" that look like fun!

What about the courting they did back then? What about the barn raisings or quilting bees? What about the horse and buggy? The corner store where everybody met and did their shopping? The smaller neighborhoods where you really knew and could count on your neighbors?

O.k., maybe I'm romanticizing everything, still there's a little part of me that longs for a time that I never knew.

We have it good, girls. Really, really good. We need to remember that on days when running the home and caring for the family seems overwhelming. On days when we don't have as much time for ourselves as we'd like to have.

We have it good. We need to remember that when we get tired of the same old "dreary" chores that can seem so repetitive.

Every time we wash a dish, do laundry, turn off a light that someone left on again, or clean a bathroom, let's remember how blessed we are!

We have running water, working toilets, electricity instead of candles or smoky lamps, medicine to give to our kids when they're sick, food we don't have to grow ourselves (unless we want to) and appliances to help us cook or wash our clothes.

We have so much more than some people had then or may even have today. Let's just be thankful!

WORKS FOR ME: FINANCIAL DIET

"We Are That Family" is hosting a special frugal edition of Works-for-me-Wednesday this week.

At first I didn't think I could contribute because I've been spending to much time goofing off lately to write a post I've been rather busy lately, but they said we could submit an old post so I am going to do that today.



When the waistbands of our clothes start to feel a little tight we have a few choices: we can go up one size in our clothes in order to be more comfortable, we can be miserable and in pain as our waist expands but our waistband doesn't, we can buy clothes with elastic waistbands, we can ignore it and hope it will go away, we can choose to examine our eating habits and exercise habits and make some adjustments if we wish to stay in the current size clothing that we are wearing.


The numbers on the scale going up, the waistband being to tight or having to let your belt out a bit are sure signs that you may have put on a few unwanted pounds.


A similar thing can happen to our finances. Suddenly the number of bills start going up. We have to let our financial belt out a notch. We have packed on a few unwanted debts.


We can do several different things. We can go up one size, and be comfortable with the "new" size of our debt. We can choose to accept the new status of things and just continue spending as we always have. The danger with that is debt is likely to keep on growing as we are "comfortable" with it. Plus, we're not actively trying to reduce our debt.


We can be miserable and in pain as our debts continue to grow but our salary doesn't. We can feel overwhelmed, helpless and out of control as our financial belt continues to expand.


We can get yet another credit card in order to enable us to keep on spending. But, like an elastic waistband, it doesn't hide the problem. It only makes you more comfortable but only for a time. You still have to pay for it in the end.


We can ignore our debt and hope it will go away. To my knowledge, that has never worked for anyone.


I have read that one way of maintaining a weight-loss is to weigh yourself a few times a week. As long as your weight gain is between 3-5 pounds it's supposed to be o.k. (some books actually limit it to 1 1/2 - 3 pounds). But after a five pound gain it is suggested that you might want to get more strict with your eating habits and cut back, while keeping up (or stepping up) your exercise habits if you don't want to gain the weight back.


I imagine the idea here is that it is alot easier to lose five pounds than 15 pounds, or 50 pounds. It's alot easier to lose less than more.


It's alot easier to pay off a little debt than alot of debt. It's alot easier to pay off $5.00 than $50.00, or $500.00. Or $5,000.00.


This just leads me to some thoughts. How much is to much? When do you begin to tighten your financial belt? When do you begin to say "enough is enough" and it's time to go on a financial diet?


My husband and I are blessed to have no credit card debt anymore. I am not bragging. We have had our share, believe me. But we have tried very hard to not get back into debt once they were paid off. But we do have a home mortgage that needs to be paid off.


We do have a roof that needs replacing. We have some bathroom repairs that need to be made. We'd like to put some more money in savings. We have one son in college and another one who will be there in a couple of more years.


I feel my debt waistband getting a little tighter as I think of things that need doing around here. And these next several months we are going to be tightening our financial belts and prayerfully going on a "diet" in order to be able to address these needs. Anybody else feeling the need to take a new look at their finances? Anybody else feeling the need for a "diet?"
